[NEW STRAITS TIMES PRESS ] KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu will offer a RM40,000 subsidy to first-time home buyers who are married and below the age of 40 for the purchase of units in its two apartment projects.

Even civil servants who meet the criteria are entitled to enjoy the subsidy, which is provided for under the ‘Terengganuku’ programme, aimed at encouraging the younger generation to own a home, as well as making housing more affordable to the people.

The two projects are at Ladang Tok Pelam here, which has 407 units, and Bandar Baru Kerteh in Kemaman (144 units).

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the original price for the Ladang Tok Pelam unit ranges from RM225,000 to RM248,000, while the units in Bandar Baru Kerteh is priced at RM197,000, before the subsidy.

“Terengganuku wants to encourage youths to own a housing unit. However, an important criterion is that they must be bankable,” he told reporters this after addressing civil servants at Wisma Darul Iman here today.

Ahmad Razif also announced that the state government had appointed the Terengganu State Economic Development Corporation (PMINT) to implement real estate developments in the state.

He said the developments would be carried out on government lands based on a government-private sector joint venture model.

“This will involve the construction of 3,000 housing units under the 1Malaysia Housing Projects for Civil Servants (PPA1M), and 482 units under PR1MA homes,” he added.

Ahmad Razif said solving the housing needs of the people as well as helping them to overcome the escalating cost of living remained as the two most important challenges for the government this year.
