[JakartaGlobe] The government recently showed support for a planned Disneyland theme park in Boyolali, Central Java, as officials expect the project will generate local jobs and attract more tourists to the province, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said on Monday (17/04).

"Disneyland would bring significant economic improvement to the area, so of course we welcome it," Pramono told reporters at the State Palace in Central Jakarta.

The secretary's comments come a week after local media outlets reported a Rp 6 trillion ($452 million) investment plan to develop the world-renowned theme park in Central Java.

Finance daily Bisnis Indonesia reported that the project's investors — including film studio and park operator Universal Studios – are expected to break ground for the 100-hectare theme park in September, citing Boyolali district head Seno Samudro.

The Jakarta Globe is still awaiting confirmation from The Walt Disney Company and Universal Studios about the project's start date.

If the plan comes to fruition, Boyolali will be host to Asia's fourth Disney theme park, after Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo.

However, previous proposals for a Disney park in the country have stalled in recent years.

In 2014, state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II said it would study the feasibility of building a theme park near the company's international airport in Kuala Namu, North Sumatra.

A year later, rumors emerged that MNC Land – the property developer company of media mogul Hary Tanoesoedibjo – would build a Disneyland theme park in resort areas in Lido, West Java.

However, the company later clarified that Disney is not affiliated with the upcoming Lido park.
